I have MacMini Late 2014 with HDD drive with El Capitan. I bought SSD Samsung Evo 970 M2 and NGFF Adapter. I have added patch-nvme by RehabMan. After that Mac showed my SSD. I tried to erase it with DiskUtility, but had an error: diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ UntitledUFS /dev/disk0 Started. I suggest using an SSD as this will improve boot times on the Mac Pro once you are done. Once the restore is done you can reboot the Mac Pro and hold down the Option key until you get the boot chooser screen. Pick the new copy of El Capitan you just restored and start up from it. That is all there is to it!
After I got my new MBP, I decided to sell my old 2010 MBP. I wanted to keep all my existing data on my old laptop, so I decided to swap out its SSD and to put in a brand new one.
The process of installing Yosemite on the new SSD was not as straightforward as I would have liked. I thought I’d blog about it to help anyone else who needed to do the same.
Basically I was trying to sell a 2010 MBP with a new SSD, with Yosemite installed but not configured.
- Download Yosemite installation from the App store. It might complain that you already have it installed but download it anyway. It will be downloaded to /Applications and be named Install OS X Yosemite.app
- Create a bootable image from the Yosemite installer on a USB stick larger than 6GB. In a terminal run:
where MyVolume is the name of your USB stick. Change this to match the name of your USB stick.
- Physically install SSD into the target laptop.
- Insert the Yosemite USB stick into the target laptop and power up. (This might take a while.)
- When the menu finally turns up, choose Disk Utility and format the SSD as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a unique name.
- Once complete, exit from Disk Utility and return the main menu.
- Choose to Install OS X on the formatted SSD.
- Follow the prompts until Yosemite is installed.
Here’s link to a video on how to physically install the SSD as well as run the software installation.
If you’d rather install El Capitan on the SSD then follow the How to Install El Capitan on a New SSD guide.
Hi Blackcells:
I assume that you have gone into 'System Preferences' > 'Startup Disk' and set it to your original drive in data doubler.
Try removing your new SSD and putting it in an external caseOWC external case or using a USB to SATA adapter USB to SATA adapter and connect it to your MBP via USB.
Open Disk Utility>Erase and format the SSD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and a GUID partition.
Install El Capitan Dmg
Then use a third party application such as Carbon Copy Cloner Carbon Copy Cloner (Not free, but worth the price) or Super Duper to copy all data from the internal HDD as well as the recovery partition.
The clone will be a exact copy of your hard drive and it will be bootable.
Install El Capitan On New Ssd Drive
Boot the MBP with the OPTION key and select the new SSD.
Install El Capitan On Mac
If it boots the MBP, perform the physical swap of drives.
El Capitan Install Dvd
